Semagard in South Africa
Pens, Doses & How to Start

Semagard is a SAHPRA-registered semaglutide made by Sun Pharma. It contains the same active ingredient as Ozempic and Wegovy, supplied in a dial pen. This page explains what it is, what it costs at mobivIVe, how the dose works, and how to start, reviewed by a registered doctor.

Reviewed by Dr Chris van Zyl (registered as M.C. van Zyl, HPCSA MP0287067), who consults patients himself and dispenses under his own Section 22C dispensing licence.

What is Semagard?

Semagard is semaglutide, a once-weekly GLP-1 receptor agonist that reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying and helps stabilise blood sugar. It is made by Sun Pharma and registered with SAHPRA (registration number 61/21.13/0768) as a Schedule 4 prescription medicine. It is a registered medicine, not a compounded product.

How much does Semagard cost in South Africa?

At mobivIVe the Semagard 1.5ml pen is R1,999 and the 3ml pen is R3,299, including VAT. For a new patient the 1.5ml pen lasts about six weeks and the 3ml pen about eight weeks while the dose is stepped up. A R500 doctor consultation is added to your first order. See how this compares on our weight loss injection price comparison.

How does the Semagard pen work?

Semagard is a dial pen containing 1.34mg of semaglutide per ml. The starting doses are marked on the pen, and your doctor tells you exactly which dose to dial. Treatment usually starts at 0.25mg once a week and is stepped up gradually, typically to 0.5mg and then 1mg, depending on how you tolerate it. Both pen sizes can deliver every dose.

Semagard or Ozempic: what is the difference?

Both contain semaglutide. Ozempic is the original brand made by Novo Nordisk, and Semagard is Sun Pharma’s SAHPRA-registered semaglutide. The active molecule is the same; the main differences are the pen and the price. See Ozempic in South Africa, or compare semaglutide and tirzepatide.

Do I need a prescription for Semagard?

Yes. Semagard is a Schedule 4 prescription medicine and cannot legally be supplied without a script. At mobivIVe every GLP-1 order requires a telephone or video consultation with Dr Chris van Zyl before anything is dispensed.
