Mounjaro is the branded form of tirzepatide, made by Eli Lilly. Tirzepatide is the newer dual-action medicine that acts on two gut hormone pathways rather than one, and generally produces more weight loss than semaglutide. This page explains what Mounjaro costs in South Africa, how supply has behaved, and what the alternatives are.

What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a once-weekly injection whose active ingredient is tirzepatide. Unlike semaglutide, which acts only on GLP-1, tirzepatide acts on both GLP-1 and GIP receptors. That dual action is why it generally produces greater weight loss, and why it has taken market share quickly since launch.
How much does Mounjaro cost in South Africa?
Branded Mounjaro typically starts at around R3,600 a month and rises with dose, subject to pharmacy markup and availability. Doctor-prescribed tirzepatide through mobivIVe is R3,199 for the 5mg pen (roughly 4 weeks) and R4,999 for the 10mg pen (roughly 8 weeks at 5mg), both including VAT. See the full price comparison for weight loss injections in South Africa.
Is Mounjaro available in South Africa?
Availability of specific strengths has been inconsistent, and shortages of the higher-dose presentations have been reported. If you are planning a course, it is worth confirming what is actually in stock before committing to a particular brand or strength.
Is tirzepatide better than semaglutide?
On average tirzepatide produces more weight loss. In the SURMOUNT-5 head-to-head trial it outperformed semaglutide directly. That does not automatically make it the right choice for you, since tolerance, budget and medical history all matter, and that decision belongs to your doctor. See our full comparison.
Do I need a prescription for Mounjaro in South Africa?
