Wegovy in South Africa
Price, Doses & How to Get It

Wegovy is the semaglutide product registered specifically for weight management, made by Novo Nordisk. Unlike Ozempic, which is registered in South Africa for type 2 diabetes, Wegovy is the brand licensed here for weight loss. This page explains what it costs, how the dose ladder works, and what your alternatives are.

Reviewed by Dr Chris van Zyl (registered as M.C. van Zyl, HPCSA MP0287067), who consults patients himself and dispenses under his own Section 22C dispensing licence.

What is Wegovy?

Wegovy is a once-weekly injection containing semaglutide, the same active molecule as Ozempic, but registered specifically for weight management rather than diabetes. It works as a GLP-1 receptor agonist, reducing appetite and slowing stomach emptying so you feel satisfied on less food.

How much does Wegovy cost in South Africa?

Novo Nordisk reduced Wegovy pricing in South Africa during 2026. The 0.25mg starting dose sits at roughly R1,873 a month, rising to about R3,746 a month at the full 2.4mg maintenance dose. The starting price is a four-week on-ramp, not what you pay long term, which is why comparing on the starting dose alone is misleading. See the full price comparison for weight loss injections in South Africa.

How does the Wegovy dose ladder work?

Semaglutide is titrated upward over several months to limit side effects. You typically begin at 0.25mg weekly and step up roughly every four weeks toward a maintenance dose. This matters for budgeting, because the monthly cost climbs as the dose does, and it matters clinically, because stepping up too quickly is the most common reason people struggle with nausea.

Wegovy or doctor-prescribed semaglutide?

Both contain semaglutide. Branded Wegovy is the registered weight-management product. Doctor-prescribed, SAHPRA-registered semaglutide (Semagard) through a programme like ours starts at R1,999 for a pen lasting roughly six weeks, which works out more affordable at maintenance doses, and includes the consultation and follow-up. Your doctor advises which suits your situation. See our semaglutide page.

Do I need a prescription for Wegovy in South Africa?
