Doctor-Led Weight Management

Weight Loss Injection Prices
Pharmacy vs Doctor-Led

Many South Africans first check weight loss injection prices at a retail pharmacy such as Dis-Chem or Clicks. This page explains how pharmacy pricing works, what you need before a pharmacy can dispense, and how that compares with a doctor-led programme, so you can compare like for like.

Reviewed by Dr Chris van Zyl (registered as M.C. van Zyl, HPCSA MP0287067), who consults patients himself and dispenses under his own Section 22C dispensing licence.

How are weight loss injections priced at pharmacies?

Medicine prices in South Africa are regulated. Every registered medicine has a single exit price set by the manufacturer, and pharmacies may add only a regulated dispensing fee. That is why the same pen costs much the same at different pharmacies. You can look up the registered price of any medicine on the medicine price database.

What do weight loss injections cost?

Pharmacy prices are typical ranges and vary with dose and stock. mobivIVe prices include VAT, plus a R500 doctor consultation on your first order.

What do I need to buy a weight loss injection at a pharmacy?

A valid prescription from a doctor, which usually means booking and paying for a separate consultation first. The pharmacy then dispenses what is in stock, and some strengths have at times been hard to find. Dose increases, side effects and follow-up are handled by the doctor who wrote the script, not the pharmacy.

What does a doctor-led programme include?

At mobivIVe the doctor consultation, the script and the dispensing happen in one place. Dr Chris van Zyl consults you by telephone or video, prescribes if the treatment is right for you, and dispenses under his own Section 22C licence. Your pen is couriered to your door with dosing instructions, and our team supports you on WhatsApp as your dose is stepped up.

Is a pharmacy or a doctor-led programme cheaper?

It depends on the medicine and your dose. For semaglutide, SAHPRA-registered Semagard at R1,999 lasts about six weeks for a new patient, which generally works out lower per month than branded semaglutide. For tirzepatide (Mounjaro) the prices are closer, and the dose you need decides the cost. Medical aid generally does not fund weight management, so most people pay directly either way.
