How does semaglutide work?

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that reduces appetite, slows stomach emptying and stabilises blood sugar, helping you feel satisfied on smaller portions, with fewer cravings and steady, medically-supervised weight loss. Tirzepatide is a newer dual-action option (GLP-1 and GIP) for clients who need more metabolic support.

Semaglutide or branded Ozempic: what is the difference?

Ozempic is the original branded semaglutide, and semaglutide is also available in doctor-prescribed pen form. Both contain the same active molecule and are supplied as easy-to-use prefilled cartridge pens, no vials, no mixing, with your dose prescribed and titrated by our doctor to keep side-effects low.

How to start semaglutide in South Africa

  1. Message us on WhatsApp. Tell our doctor-led team your goal.
  2. Medical questionnaire & doctor consultation. Complete a short questionnaire, then a telephone or virtual consultation with our registered doctor, which is required for all GLP-1 medicines (semaglutide, Ozempic and tirzepatide). If it is safe and suitable, a script is issued.
  3. Delivered to your door. Your prefilled pen is couriered anywhere in South Africa, and you begin your weekly routine.

Am I eligible for semaglutide?

You may be a good candidate if you want structured, medically-supervised weight loss and can self-inject a weekly pen. Because semaglutide, Ozempic and tirzepatide are prescription GLP-1 medicines, a telephone or virtual doctor consultation is required for every order, because they cannot be dispensed without one. During screening we also check for conditions that need extra care, such as a history of certain thyroid or pancreatic conditions, pregnancy, breastfeeding or planning pregnancy, significant heart, kidney or liver disease, or medicines that may interact.

What it is

Semaglutide is a GLP-1 receptor agonist that helps reduce appetite, slow stomach emptying and stabilise blood sugar, making it a powerful tool for medical weight loss. By acting on the same receptors as your natural GLP-1 hormone, it helps you feel satisfied on smaller portions, reduces cravings and smooths out post-meal glucose spikes. This 1mg pen is designed for standard GLP-1 programmes with weekly injections, and is ideal for clients who struggle with overeating, emotional eating or plateaued weight loss despite lifestyle changes.

Used for

  • Medically supervised weight-loss programmes
  • Reducing appetite, portion sizes and snacking
  • Central/abdominal fat and metabolic syndrome
  • Supporting blood-sugar control in overweight clients
  • Long-term weight-maintenance after initial loss

What it is

This higher-strength semaglutide pen is intended for clients who have titrated up and require higher maintenance doses for continued weight loss and metabolic control. It delivers the same GLP-1 effects—reduced appetite, slower gastric emptying and improved post-meal glucose handling—but with more total drug per pen, extending duration at higher doses. It’s well suited to clients on established GLP-1 protocols, those with significant starting weight, or those needing prolonged treatment to stabilise results.

Used for

  • Ongoing/advanced semaglutide weight-loss plans
  • Clients at higher weekly doses (e.g. 1–2mg)
  • Larger or higher-risk patients needing longer treatment horizons
  • Reducing visceral fat and waist circumference

What it is

Ozempic is the original branded form of semaglutide from Novo Nordisk, widely used globally for type 2 diabetes management and medical weight loss. It acts on GLP-1 receptors to promote satiety, reduce food intake and improve blood-sugar control, which often translates into steady, sustainable weight reduction. This pen is ideal for clients who prefer the reassurance of the originator brand, or whose doctor has specifically recommended Ozempic for metabolic or diabetic reasons.

Used for

  • Medical weight-loss where branded Ozempic is preferred
  • Type 2 diabetes support under medical care
  • Clients who want brand-name Ozempic specifically
  • Appetite and craving control alongside lifestyle changes
  • Reducing long-term cardiometabolic risk
